The Most Definitive List of the BEST FILMS ...so far

There is no paucity of 'Best Movies' lists, and most would agree there is no need for another one. However, I offer the following list as a corrective if not definitive list of essential cinema. Most 'best' lists are marred by the number of critics and 'experts' polled, ranging from intelligent and erudite to shallow and trashy. Granted, the advantage of numbers is the leveling effect that tends to filter out the oddities and eccentricities of taste, often of a questionable nature. Poll enough people, and CITIZEN KANE will come out way on top over DEEP THROAT, which is actually on one of the personal lists in the Sight & Sight BFI poll. But then, the power of consensus tends toward a certain conventionality, which is why the Beatles album SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND became the designated 'greatest album of all time'. Furthermore, as most polls require each critic or expert to list just ten titles, they further skew the list towards the most emblematic works. The reason why CITIZEN KANE and 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY rank so much higher than the equally impressive MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS and BARRY LYNDON is many people would rather list just one title per director and therefore choose the most famous work as tribute to the artist's entire output. Then, it's no wonder that 8½ usually ranks very high whereas WHITE SHEIK and I VITELLONI tend to rank far lower, if at all.
In contrast to multi-critic polls, there are individual lists ranging from those of professional critics/scholars to cinephiles to movie fans. A few critics devoted an entire book to their idea of what constitutes core cinema. Jonathan Rosenbaum's ESSENTIAL CINEMA, Roger Ebert's THE GREAT MOVIES, and David Thomson's HAVE YOU SEEN..." especially come to mind. There are also books like 1001 MOVIES YOU MUST SEE BEFORE YOU DIE. If 1001 MOVIES is essentially just a fancier consumer guide, however useful it may be to novices, the problem with Rosenbaum's book is the willful eccentricity and fetish for contrarianism whereas Roger Ebert's book is all too predictable and conventional. Thomson's sensibility lies somewhere in between, but his blend of sneering haughtiness and penchant for vulgarity often makes for questionable taste. He's both one to name-drop Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu as superiors to Akira Kurosawa — valid or not, a staple of critical snobbery, especially under French influence — all the while sticking his snout in the trough of P.T. Anderson's MAGNOLIA and Quentin Tarantino's PULP FICTION. In a way, one can understand why a critic like Rosenbaum wants to draw our attention to the relatively unsung but deserving figures of cinema, but he takes this to ludicrous extremes in his book. Worse, for ideological purposes, pseudo-intellectual conceits, or personal reasons, he goes out of his way to favor the likes of Chantal Akerman and Jerry Lewis. His book should have been called 'Eccentric Cinema' instead.

It's been said that one's likes and dislikes are a matter of taste, but one should be able to discern matters of taste from matters of judgement. We all know there are particular songs, books, and movies that we love regardless of artistic merit, just as there are works that, despite artistic merit, don't particularly move us or even leave us cold. So, no one with sense should mistake a 'best' or 'greatest' list with one of personal 'favorites'. I may enjoy MYSTIC PIZZA more than CITIZEN KANE but am not going to pretend it is a better or greater work.
Then, there's the difference between 'best' and 'greatest', between quality/brilliance vs impact/importance. Some of the 'greatest' movies, such as GONE WITH THE WIND(which I still haven't seen in its entirety), aren't considered great works of art. And yet, their greatness can't be denied in their entertainment value, mythology, social impact, and broad & lasting appeal. STAR WARS is another such movie, and its impact on the larger culture and its influence on cinematic magic & technology is incalculable. Indeed, many lesser works(by artistic criteria) have had far greater impact on society, history, and the industry. That said, even if some artistically impressive films have had little immediate impact on the culture-at-large, they've had far greater long-term effect, often of an indirect nature, than the far more popular and celebrated works of the time have. GANDHI was a far bigger cultural phenomenon than BLADE RUNNER, but whereas the former hardly altered the course of movie history, the latter pointed to new directions in science fiction, horror, and cinematic poetry. If one had to make a list of the 25 key movies in terms of their long-term influence on the art and 'science' of movies, they'd be:

The Birth of a Nation
Battleship Potemkin
The General
Metropolis
Sunrise
Passion of Joan of Arc
M
Alexander Nevsky
Citizen Kane
Rome: Open City
Los Olvidados
Rashomon
Diary of a Country Priest
Ugetsu
Seven Samurai
Hiroshima Mon Amour
Breathless & Jules and Jim
L'Avventura
A Fistful of Dollars
Andrei Rublev
2001: A Space Odyssey
The Wild Bunch
The Godfather
The Exorcist or Jaws
Star Wars
Yes, Madame
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Saving Private Ryan
Mulholland Dr.

These are films that profoundly expanded one's appreciation of cinema as an art-form or trail-blazed with new technical/stylistic devices. One is tempted to mention John Ford's STAGECOACH, but as great a figure Ford is in the annals of cinema, it's doubtful cinematic art and grammar would have been much different without him. Same goes for Ingmar Bergman, truly one of the great masters but ultimately less influential than figures like Carl Dreyer and Luis Bunuel who had a more purely cinematic grasp of the medium. Naturally, JAWS and STAR WARS had a wider impact than DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST, but then, cinema, like most other arts, exist in separate universes. While most movie-goers stick with entertainment or Hollywood-style movie-movies, there will always be another cinema culture that, despite lack of mass appeal, will preserve what is deemed the best of personal cinema deep into the future. Despite the far smaller members and audience, the devotion and commitment of this community, in the long run, cannot be matched by the whims of the masses. This culture shouldn't be confused with the cultist-mentality that draws together like-minded individuals with some eccentric, deviant, and/or esoteric involvement of ideas and emotions. Such cultist mentality can latch onto big productions, like STAR WARS and STAR TREK movies, or Midnight Movies like THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, which however may be rather passe in a wide culture that has embraced globo-homo-mania, tranny nuttery, loose sexuality, freakish displays of tattoos & piercings, women with green/purple hair, and various other kinds of the 'New Normal'. In this day and age, what is so different about the freaks in that movie?

Then, there are movies that are great for their seemingly timeless appeal through the ages and around the world. Some of them have genuine artistic merit, others do not, but they possess a certain magical quality or magnetic allure that never seems to wane. A list of such movies may go as follows:

City Lights
Night at the Opera
The Wizard of Oz
Gone with the Wind
Casablanca
It's a Wonderful Life
Bambi
Sunset Blvd.
High Noon
From Here to Eternity
Shane
A Star is Born (Judy Garland)
On the Waterfront
Singin' in the Rain
North by Northwest
Ten Commandments
Ben-Hur
Psycho
West Side Story
Lawrence of Arabia
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Dr. Strangelove
Goldfinger
The Sound of Music
Doctor Zhivago
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Graduate
Cool Hand Luke
The Planet of the Apes
Patton
Love Story
The French Connection
The Godfather
The Exorcist
Jaws
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Rocky
Star Wars
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Halloween
Apocalypse Now
Raiders of the Lost Ark
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Terms of Endearment
Platoon
Home Alone
Terminator 2
Groundhog Day
Silence of the Lambs
The Lion King
The Shawshank Redemption
Pulp Fiction
Toy Story
Titanic
The Sixth Sense
No Country for Old Men
The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan)
The Wolf of Wall Street

Some movies are mega-hits upon release but fail to connect with later audiences, whereas others are only moderate hits(or even box-office misses) but gain traction over time and grow in stature among movie-lovers. (A work like THE BIG LEBOWSKI still remains in the Cult Category because it hasn't caught on with the wide audience like THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.) And then, there are movies like ON THE WATERFRONT that most people don't watch but are still talked about and remembered because of Marlon Brando's legendary performance and Elia Kazan's powerful direction.

Now, if I had to list my favorites, they'd be something like this:

Midnight Cowboy
Mystic Pizza
Midnight Run
Glengarry Glen Ross
Blackcoat's Daughter
The Wild Bunch
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
The Osterman Weekend
13th Warrior
Harold and Maude
To Live and Die in L.A.
The Shining
Lolita
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Risky Business
Wicker Park
L'Appartement
Twilight: New Moon
Resident Evil: Extinction
The Graduate
Excalibur
Cool Hand Luke
Hey Babu Riba
Dita Saxova... among others.

As for the list below, it focuses on films with the greatest artistic merit. Now, what is meant by 'art'? In the generic sense, any creative endeavor(even by children with crayons) can be defined as 'art', but the term here denotes creative pursuit at a much higher, deeper, or original level. Whatever art is, it requires talent, intelligence, curiosity, wit, brilliance, originality, vision, courage, search for truth, sublime intuitions, and/or some quality that stands apart and above the routine & ordinary. Also, there is art as endeavor and art as product. Given Ingmar Bergman's seriousness, just about everything he attempted could be called an artistic endeavor. Still, if the product fails to live up to the standards of art, it is, at best, failed art. While few film-makers have exhibited nearly all the hallmarks of an artist — Stanley Kubrick for example — , most artists, even great ones, are noticeably more pronounced in certain facets of art while being deficient or uninterested in others. Woody Allen is a great wit, a man of verbal brilliance but was never a visionary. Andrei Tarkovsky had depth, but he couldn't make a movie like MIDNIGHT RUN in a million years.
What is the highest quality of art? Perhaps the search for truth. Granted, no amount of investment in truth can make for art without talent and mastery. But what about brilliance in the service of the lie or nothing in particular? Plenty of TV commercials are done with virtuosity and even originality, but are they art? Too shallow for art. What about a work like BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, which is utterly original and brilliant but a propaganda of historical falsehood? Can propaganda be art? Apparently yes, when the work is sufficiently bold, powerful, and imaginative to compensate for its deficiencies. Also, truths of a moral or psychological nature can be found in a historical lie. After all, the moral and spiritual lessons of Christianity would be valid even if the story were a myth. In MEET JOHN DOE, the Doe character is based on a lie but nevertheless stands for certain truths about decency, brotherliness, and understanding.

The list that follows is a general hierarchy. Needless to say, there is no such thing as the 'best movie ever made'. The titles in the first quarter or third of the list are more approximate to merit whereas the later titles, especially in the last fourth, are only roughly ordered, and many could easily be re-arranged vis-a-vis other titles. Partly, it's more interesting to appraise diamonds than pieces of iron, for which jeweler's lens isn't required. But also, there are far fewer very great works than pretty good movies, of which there are many many more than on the list.

There should be few surprises here. SEVEN SAMURAI is often touted as the greatest action movie. Of course, it is much more. A 16th century Japanese village as a microcosm of full range of human drama, from comic to tragic as the characters, samurai and peasants, are presented with qualities heroic and all-too-human. It is far and away Akira Kurosawa's greatest work, Everest among tall mountains. ANDREI RUBLEV is oddly modernist in exploring the scope and range of cinematic language unknown to other arts. It is a work of 'sculpting in time', Andrei Tarkovsky's characterization of the truest nature of cinema. And yet, despite its total immersion in the new medium, it is steeped in the traditions of Russian history and culture. The sensibility is Medievalist, or Eternalist. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke is surely the most amazing single leap not only in special effects technology but its aesthetic fulfillment. Nothing in the history of science fiction prepared for its arrival and nothing since has equaled it in vision and imagination. There have been plenty of movies featuring new technology, but novelty itself doesn't make for art. If so, the first talkie, THE JAZZ SINGER, would be the greatest movie ever. Orson Welles and his crew on CITIZEN KANE used every piece of technology they could get their hands on, old and new, to reinvent what cinema could be, the vision of a wunderkind. Genius can use the new to create something unique; or it can use the old to make it seem anew, or better yet, timeless. And yet, CITIZEN KANE is more than a bundle of brilliant tricks and techniques. Even if one were to ignore all the brilliance, there is a powerful classic drama of triumph and decline of the human spirit. As such, it is far more than BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN that today is mainly appreciated for its montage. VERTIGO is like Alfred Hitchcock's notion of Alice-in-Wonderland for adults with tragic disposition. Though Hitchcock has often resorted to dream-like effects, it is VERTIGO that feels like a dream from beginning to end. A truly hypnotic work where no amount of reason and logic can spare the soul from waves of passion. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE being so high up on the list may surprise some. It is mostly regarded as a holiday favorite, along with MIRACLE ON 34th STREET. But, it is a standout even by Capra's standards, a true miracle where everything fell just right in place. Like SEVEN SAMURAI and SIBERIADE, it finds what is epic in the intimate details of a single community. The three works that may raise most eyebrows are surely A.I., SIBERIADE, and TIME OF THE GYPSIES. Steven Spielberg's direction of Stanley Kubrick and Brian Aldiss's creation has as many detractors as admirers. Many thought Spielberg took the edge off the original idea. In their zeal to knock on Spielberg, they even assumed that the ending was tagged on when, in fact, it was in the original. Instead of regarding the movie as Kubrick 'versus' Spielberg, I see the dynamics as a matter of 'plus'. Under the latter's direction, the movie gained as much as it lost. While Kubrick's version might have been more challenging, the combination of Kubrick's misanthropism and Spielberg's magic adds yet another layer of tragedy to the story. Emir Kusturica is well-known in the film community, especially for WHEN FATHER WAS AWAY ON BUSINESS and UNDERGROUND. But TIME OF THE GYPSIES is his greatest work, a treasure made of the trash heap of life. It is too powerful to categorize as 'magic realism'. Perhaps, it's better called Dream Realism, or 'Drealism'. And then, there is SIBERIADE, a huge hit in the Soviet Union but hardly discussed in the West for whatever reason. To me, it is along with SEVEN SAMURAI the greatest instance of all the resources of cinema converging to make a statement about the human condition without losing sight of all the small details that make life unique, peculiar, and eccentric.
Jacques Tati's PLAYTIME, along with ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST by Sergio Leone, PROFOUND DESIRES OF THE GODS by Shohei Imamura, and of course 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, all released around the same period, represented the fulfillment of personal film-making at its boldest and grandest. Some might even call them 'follies', but they shouldn't be confused with the likes of LOLA MONTEZ and APOCALYPSE NOW that, for all their impressive qualities, failed to hit their mark. Cinema has often been billed as 'total art', but not many works have dared to realize the full measure of its potential. Both 47 RONIN and UGETSU MONOGATARI demonstrate why many critics consider Kenji Mizoguchi to be Japan's greatest film director. While 47 RONIN is not without drama and pathos, its pace and length make it more suited for aesthetic appreciation. If 47 RONIN is about men of the elite world who must descend to chicaneries of the lower depths to plot revenge in defense of honor, UGETSU is about men of the lower world who aspire to enter the higher world by station or dream-state. If Tati constructed large-scale toy-lands as models for grasping the ordered disorder of modernity, Alain Resnais dissected moments lingering in the psyches of people separated by time and place. Few directors have been so keen as to the inner logic so at odds with the logic governing the material world. If VERTIGO settles into a single psyche, MURIEL 'coldly' skips from one subjectivity to another, 'objectively' creating a collage of separate perspectives. The effect would have been disorienting, as in the far inferior PETULIA by Richard Lester, but for Resnais' mastery of balancing experimentalism with classicism as well as radical sensibility with respect for bourgeois manners. Chris Marker conceived of an approach somewhere between Hitchcock and Resnais in his creation of LA JETEE, a perfect piece. David Lynch made two masterpieces, ERASERHEAD and MULHOLLAND DR., and even though the former is more audacious, the latter is richer in bringing together all of Lynch's obsessions and visions for reinvention and reassessment than merely as grandiose retreading, which mars FANNY AND ALEXANDER. Perhaps, Lynch has been wiser not to work on projects unless he can truly deliver something that takes him further a step. He doesn't want to turn ferment into formula. STALKER is oddly one of the greatest science fiction film despite having no special effects. It might be called psy-fi, and indeed, all the strange things could be happening in the mind. And yet, it's where psychology melds into spirituality. If Bergman, ultimately favoring the mind, rejected the spiritual, though not without sadness, Tarkovsky, along with Carl Dreyer, found a hidden connection to the spiritual world even if the source of the spring could never be known. In a way, Bresson's spiritual vision is sadder though no less meaningful. If Tarkovsky had clairvoyance for underground wells, Bresson's sensibility feels parched and isolated, without confirmation. Tarkovsky's last work, THE SACRIFICE, is his darkest yet still remains with the faith, whereas Bresson's last, L'ARGENT, seems to have given up on everything; the spiritual can last only so long without nourishment. Faith needs fodder, something Bresson was unable to unearth. Fritz Lang established himself as one of the silent greats and then transformed overnight into a master of sound film with M. Genius has an instantaneous quality, and Lang figured out the potentials of the new technology faster than just about anyone. It's been said the coming of sound, at least for a time, undermined the purely visual possibilities of cinema, but M retained the visual power while taking full advantage of sound that birthed Peter Lorre's pervert-persona, at once victim and villain, man and child. L'APPARTEMENT by Gilles Mimouni is perhaps, along with SIBERIADE, one of the most unsung great films ever. At least SIBERIADE was much lauded in Russia itself. L'APPARTEMENT, a work as rich as VERTIGO and EYES WIDE SHUT, didn't even get theatrical release in the US and is mostly a cult item for those who love WICKER PARK, the Hollywood remake that has its own special strengths. Hiroshi Teshigahara is best known for WOMAN IN THE DUNES, a masterpiece, but a more fascinating and endlessly provocative film is FACE OF ANOTHER, which has been compared with John Frankenheimer's SECONDS, a far inferior work, more like an over-long episode of The Twilight Zone. FACE OF ANOTHER is one of the genuine works of cinematic modernism and, like MURIEL, poses questions that pose more questions. A distinction between classic and modern sensibilities is that the former believes there is or must be an answer even if it isn't found whereas the latter is resigned to there being none, thereby consigning humanity to never-ending series of questions. Sergei Eisenstein's OCTOBER is the kind of cinema that became moot with the coming of sound. It simply couldn't have been conceived of as a 'talkie'. It took the art/science of montage to its furthest limit, turning politics into poetics, story into symphony. VAMPYR, FAUST, and SUNRISE are proof that F.W. Murnau was an unparalleled artist of moods and nightmares. If any film-maker understood cinema as music, it was he. MARKETA LAZAROVA is comparable to ANDREI RUBLEV and dizzying in its multifaceted immersion into another time so different from our own. If Frantisek Vlacil's film unceremoniously drops us into a rough-and-tumble world of naturalism, Sergei Parajanov recalls the past through carefully arranged iconography of figures and objects in COLOR OF POMENGRANATES, one of the few sound classics that could have been conceived of in the Silent Era. THE THIRD MAN is a perfect work on par with the best of Orson Welles. HARAKIRI is Masaki Kobayashi at his most masterly, one where the formal qualities ultimately serve to convey a tragic humanism. Raoul Walsh's THE BIG TRAIL is a sprawling work, a great tribute to the adventures and struggles that made America. Along with the greatly underappreciated CIMARRON, it is a Western when the genre had endless possibilities before being winnowed into cliches and formulations.
